The National Fundamental Education Centre (NFEC) was set up by the Government of India in the year 1956. Later, this Centre was renamed as Department of Adult Education and made part of the National Institute of Education under the N.C.E.R.T. in 1961. The Government of India gradually gave more focus on the adult literacy programmes in the country.
